My Thoughts On Painting & Creating Art ...
“ The way watercolor mixes and flows together never ceases to enchant me. I chose the word enchant purposefully as the process of making art is magical for me. That’s not to discount my over forty-five years of art practice and instruction, but more to emphasize the importance of being totally in the moment while creating. Technically I am interested in how I can place a stroke here, a wash of color there, and leave a flicker of white paper untouched (creating a bunch of abstract patterns) which gradually coalesce to reveal detailed impressions of California.
Both everyday and majestic images inspire me. Like my namesake, the Magpie, my eye is attracted to beautiful things, more specifically to distinct fragments of color which sparkle like gems in the light. Living on the coast and in the mountains of beautiful California, I am always surrounded with plenty of inspiration.
It sounds corny, but for me, time and the rest of the world fade away when I create. My process becomes a meditation where the physical boundaries between me, my subject, and my materials disappear. I exist with little conscious thought, just enjoying the moment. As the light and the colors magically flow together and begin to reveal concrete images on my page, I feel like I am a part of the magic of that particular space. My hope is that when looking at my art you can share a part of that magic.
Even though I am primarily a watercolorist, I work with many media currently including fused glass and jewelry design. Please take a look at my online galleries, and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any interest in a piece.
Hoping you feel the magic.”
